From their earliest days to today, our Members have been driven by a commitment to their communities. Our pioneers sought to bring natural gas not just to their own homes, but to support the entire community around them.

Our Member Utilities bring natural gas where it’s needed most. By working collaboratively, our Members have built the world’s largest rural natural gas distribution system—helping 91% of Albertans rely on natural gas as their primary source of heat.

Services spanning across Alberta
From the Peace River to the United States

Our network spans from the northern reaches of the Peace River all the way to the U.S. border—and even crosses it at one point! From the Saskatchewan border to the foothills, our Members serve communities across Alberta.
Serving communities

Our Members serve family farms, vibrant acreage communities, towns and villages, large industries, and everything in between. Local utility teams handle it all—from building pipelines and installing meters to managing billing and day-to-day operations.

Our utilities are owned or governed by their members or communities.

Community-Driven Choices

Community members set the rates, policies and governance for what is best for their community. Municipal and First Nations utilities have departments that report to their elected councils. The gas co-ops are run by a board of directors elected from the community.

Even if you’re not on the local co-op board, you can still have your voice heard at your co-operative utility's Annual General Meeting. Our Governance Structure

The FedGas office is based in Edmonton

We are governed by an eight-member board of directors elected from each of our eight zones across Alberta. This board sets policies and implements strategies on behalf of our Member Utilities.

Representatives from the Member Utilities attend FedGas' Annual General Meeting to discuss matters important to the organization as a whole.

What FedGas Provides

FedGas provides centralized services to our Member Utilities

Training

Training is an essential component to FedGas. The training courses we offer are designed to provide learning and development opportunities to our Member Utility employees and directors.

FIRE Program

Over the years, FedGas has provided insurance to its Members. In 2007, this became the FedGas Insurance Reciprocal Exchange Program (FIRE), which was created to maintain better control over our own insurance premiums.

Operations and Maintenance Guidelines

Our Members have developed an Operations and Maintenance Guideline manual which sets out standards that our Member Utilities must follow in the operations of their utility. This manual is a living document with sections reviewed monthly to ensure it is kept up to date and often exceeds existing standards.

Benefit and Pension Program

FedGas has always provided comprehensive benefit and pension options for Member Utility employees and directors. In 2010, the pension program changed to the Alberta Communities Pension Plan, which is now also available to all municipalities.

RUBIS

FedGas offers retail billing services to natural gas utilities through a subsidiary company, Rural Utilities Billing Information System (RUBIS). RUBIS has one full time employee based in the FedGas office.

Gas Measurement & Inspection

The Measurement Department at FedGas oversees inspections of the interconnections between supplier pipelines and the Member Utilities system. It also monitors the interconnections for emergency situations, and assists the Member Utilities field workers troubleshoot problems. The department also manages the installation of wireless meter reading devices. FedGas is Measurement Canada-approved to re-certify electronic equipment in the field.

Alberta Odorant Services

As natural gas is odorless, an odorant, Mercaptan, is added to give natural gas its distinctive smell. Since the 1990's, three of our Member Utilities (Bow River Gas Co-op Ltd., East Smoky Gas Co-op Ltd., and Smoky Lake County) have been delivering odorant to the rest of our Member Utilities. In 2011, this service became a FedGas subsidiary called Alberta Odorant Services (AOS).

Rural Gas Grants

FedGas is contracted by the Province of Alberta to administer the Rural Gas Grant. This grant provides funding to gas utilities to help keep the installation of gas services affordable for rural homes. 

Our partners include Gas Alberta Inc. and the government’s Rural Gas Program. Most FedGas Member Utilities are shareholders in Gas Alberta Inc., a private corporation with the mandate to aggregate natural gas supply for resale back to its shareholders.

The Rural Gas Program was started in 1973 by the Province of Alberta to help ensure Albertans could have access to natural gas.

FedGas is committed to providing leadership, support, advocacy, strategic partnerships, and services to our Member utilities, while strengthening safe and sustainable rural natural gas systems. 


Gas Alberta Inc.

Gas Alberta Inc. is owned by the majority of Member Utilities of the Federation of Alberta Gas Co-ops Ltd. It is Gas Alberta's mandate to purchase natural gas supply from the market for these utilities at rates lower than the regulated natural gas retailers.
